Some people eat comfort foods when they’re stressed, but not me, when I’m feeling stressed or out of sorts, I watch what I call “comfort” movies. We’ve been in temporary lodging for a couple weeks now and the house we were suppose to get yesterday won’t be ready for another two weeks so I’ve resorted to watching my comfort movies.
They are Bridget Jones and Pride & Prejudice. Love Actually is another good movie but it got packed in with the hold baggage. Normally, I watch the 1995 Pride & Prejudice mini-series with the delectable Colin Firth, but those videos are amongst our household goods yet to be delivered, so I went out and bought the 2005 “Pride & Prejudice” movie with Keira Knightley. I’m happy to report it’s just as romantic as the mini-series and just as comforting 🙂
Do you have a comfort movie?
BTW, just when I think it’s OK for me to complain about the housing wait, which if we hadn’t already been half way around the earth for the last 2 months wouldn’t be a long wait at all, then I meet someone who has it worse. I met a woman in the laundry room today who just got married, moved to Drum, her husband just found out he’s deploying AND housing told them they are 485 on the waitlist which means about a year or so. Yikes.
My two week wait just sounded a whole lot better!
Comfort movies is so true! I never thought of it that way. For me, it’s the movies that happen to be on when I’m flipping around the TV that I have to stop and watch even if I’ve seen them a thousand times…
Love, Actually
When Harry Met Sally
Sleepless in Seattle
Any Star Wars movie
Any Hugh Grant movie
X-Files movie or tv show
There’s a lot more… 🙂
P.S. So glad you are settling in to your house!

Gina: GREAT to hear from you and especially to hear about the baby! What a great idea to watch Pride and Prejudice during labor. Hopefully you WON’T have to watch the whole thing before the baby comes. I agree the mini series is still the best but I could enjoy the movie because I know the missing parts by heart 😉 Hi to K. from both J.and I and please keep us posted about the baby.

I love the Pride and Prejudice mini series. The new one doesn’t compare, you just can’t tell that story in 2 hours! I plan on watching P & P while I’m in labor and then maybe Anne of Green Gables, another looong comfort movie of mine. -gina jones

Wow – Love the Comfort Movie idea – I always go for the ice cream when the going gets tough – maybe sitting down and watching a good movie that will make me laugh or cry would be alot less fattening!
Sleepless in Seattle and Ferris Buhler’s Day Off are two that come to mind immediately 🙂

Thanks Patti! It took me a couple of weeks to get used to the new hair, but now I love it.
You will LOVE Mansfield Park. I am sure of it.

KBG: Yeah, gotta love those British accents. 🙂 The guy (Matthew Macfayden) in Pride and Prejudice (2005) has the best voice/accent I’ve heard in a long time.
I didn’t watch “Little House on the Prairie” as a child but FM keeps telling FG about it since he had to read the book series in 5th grade.

Josie: I forgot about Persuasion (1995) ~ I really liked it and may have to buy it for my “temporary lodging” viewing. I’ve never seen Mansfield Park. Is it as romantic as P&P and Persuasion?
BTW, I’ve been meaning to leave a comment on L13:Your hair looks great! Love the highlights. I enjoy keeping up with your blog ~ we REALLY miss Guam!!

Pride & Prejudice (1995) is one of my comfort movies. Others are Sense & Sensibility, Mansfield Park and Persuasion. I guess you could say Jane Austen brings me comfort. 🙂

I have different comfort movies for different moods. When I need to laugh I watch Pee Wee’s Big Adventure, or Forrest Gump. When I am stressed out I usually need an emotional release and I watch a good tear jerker like Lonesome Dove, or Anne of Green Gables.
My Mom and I have always wanted to go to Prince Edward Island, Canada. If you have ever seen A of GG you will know why. If you ever make it up that way we would love to hear about it.

I am a big fan of Love Actually as well. And Bridget Jones. Why do we love those movies with British accents so? I also really like the movie Chocolat. Oh, and Little House on the Prairie. I’ve gotten the boy completely addicted!

Yes, I have comfort movies. I am a huge fan of Love Actually, all of the national lampoon’s movies (brings back fond memories of childhood), The Sound of Music, and The Breakfast Club. I like Bridget Jones too. Reading your post made me think back to many a cold day in Germany, huddled on my couch with my blanket and my comfort movies. 🙂
