The sweater weather without the cold and rain made this Halloween very pleasant. FG’s costume was a hit once people realized who she was ~ she dressed as Wednesday from the Addams Family It worked out well since Halloween was on a Wednesday this year. At one house, a visiting grandma kept asking FG why her doll had no head. I could tell the woman was getting stressed thinking some strange child decapitated her doll. I finally stepped in and explained. Once I mentioned the Addams Family, I saw visible relief on the woman’s face. What I really wanted to say was “Lighten up, it’s Halloween!”
All our neighbors, including us, set up on our porches awaiting the onslaught of children which never came. We live on a newly built street so I’m guessing a lot of parents didn’t know we were here. We had about 50-75 kids come through but I’d expected more like 300. By the end of the allotted “trick or treat” time, I was giving away large handfuls of candy so as not to have any leftovers. Last thing I need is the temptation of chocolate.
FG brought home more than enough to give a dentist nightmares…
Norbert: we’d love to see a photo of Vinzenz in his costume. We were always thrilled to have “trick or treaters” stop by when we lived there but only had about 4-5 German children who were brave enough 🙂

Halloween is getting more and more popular for german kids and so Vinzenz and his cousin costumed and strolled to the neigborhood.
The only thing is to know which german neigbors know about halloween and which dont. A good sign is a carved pumpkin somewhere in the yard.

Great costumes! That’s funny about the decapitated doll and grandma.
Our neighborhood got 21 kids, according to my mother who lives a few houses down.. and 7 of them were my kids and their friends. There is an annual block party one street over and everybody goes there. We just put a bowl of candy out on the porch and go. But I think a lot of people go to churches or community centers for “Trunk of Treat” or other activities. That would not seem like Halloween to me.

We didn’t have that many either and our neighborhood is full of kids. I have way too much candy left and I didn’t use my usual strategy of buying candy that I don’t like. No…I bought Snickers, Reese’s, and even Dark Chocolate from Hershey’s. Not a good thing.
I wonder if more families are going to the church/community sponsored (safe) activities. It seems to me like Halloween is getting a bad rap these days. When I was growing up, it was no more sinister than a bunch of kids dressed up for the purpose of collecting as much candy as possible.
On post, I went through 10 bags of candy in an hour. Boy, did the German kids like this American holiday!

Good to hear you had nice weather for Halloween! Lucky for the kids the rain held off but it was a little “sticky” here, in more ways than one…:-)
We went out with the boys for the first hour and passed out candy the second. We only had 5 kids in that hour…5! As you can imagine our candy bowls are overflowing….I guess I will have to break down and throw lots away.
