I go through stages with wines. Were money not an object, I know exactly what I would prefer to drink, namely, Chauteauneuf-du-Pape (Clos des Papes), Cakebread or Grgich Hills. When I worked at a hotel in the Grand Tetons, our very informed Food and Beverage Manager, Dan, had a wine tasting for us much less enlightened wine drinkers. I learned so much at that tasting but don’t know if that was a good thing or not because it raised my level of what I wanted to drink but, not necessarily what I can afford to buy. 😉
Being price conscious, I continue to search for those wines which are an excellent value for my occasional evening glass of wine. For a few years, I went through a Chardonnay stage, then one favorite (Chateauneuf-du-Pape) was affordable because we lived in Germany and a bottle was BELOW $10.00. Talk about spoiled! Then, for a while, after a wonderful trip to Italy, I was into Chianti wines. It’s taken me a year here to find a new wine and I’ve tried a lot of different kinds. Here’s my new favorite:
It’s an excellent value ($12.00) and tastes yummy. Are you a wine lover? What is your favorite “value” wine?
Just a FYI . . . I was in Wal-Mart on Saturday and they had this wine for $4.96! You might want to check you WM and stock up!

Thanks for the comment. I checked out Chowhound ~ what a fun site. I got caught up in a message board about the movie “Sideways” and which wines they would show as positive or negative ~ very interesting.

I was tickled to see this post! About a year ago I started really getting interested in wines and experimenting. I LOVE [Yellow Tail] Shiraz! It is yummy! And affordable. Another I found I enjoy is the Alice White Chardonnay. Its has nice flavors and isn’t too dry. I had a little notebook I kept about wines and it was fun to learn. I also tried the Red Zins from California. i liked a few of them as well. I got a lot of interesting input on a website called Chowhound. They have amazing message boards and the people were so nice and willing to offer suggestions.

Hi Patti,
I know we share some favorites…
Babera D’Asti 2003 or 2005 my favorite by far.
While in Dallas, I found a south African blend of Shiraz and Pinotage called Sebeka. I bought it on a whim (it had a cool label, I’ve tried and liked South African red before, and it was cheap). Well, it was so nice, I went back and bought more to take home for the collection.
Let me know what you think!

It’s a dry wine but not so dry that it sucks all the moisture from your mouth 😉

Question: Is the Shiraz dry or sweet?

I’ve actually thought about buying that one…I’ve enjoyed “Little Black Dress” and one of the Reislings (my favorite). Of course, if I’m going ultra-cheap, I buy Beringer’s White Zin, which is always pretty good.

Not a value wine, but hands down Claudy Bay Sauvignon takes the cake. 1996 was THE year!
Australian wines have really been a favorite of mine, too!
