For the last month, FG has been begging for a hamster. By begging, I mean every two hours, I get the question “What do you think about me getting a hamster?” I was pretty strong about saying no at the beginning but, after losing Bennett, I’m starting to waiver a bit.
Not to mention, FG is getting better at her persuasion tactics. Since she’s learning probabilities at school, she brought her legal pad and pen with her last night to have a hamster discussion with me:
FG: What is the probability that I can get a hamster?
Me: Oh, about 60%
FG: If I get a hamster, what is the probability that I can get a white one?
Me: 30%
With that, she runs off to figure out how to raise the probability of getting a white hamster.
My reluctance about getting a hamster is what to do with it when we leave the island in 2.5 years. Also, I really don’t like the white ones with the beady red eyes (too mouse like) and, ironically, FG loves them.
I’m sure Sport would be thrilled to have a hamster in the house ~ all the while hoping it makes the grave mistake of escaping the cage 😉
I was JUST reading my Woman’s Day Magazine & there’s an article on pg 118 (will scan to you later) on hamsters & how they can carry salmonella. That might help with your decision on the hamster purchase. Be sure to put locks on doors of cage, they are Houdini’s when it comes to getting out at night! No cedar shavings either in cage. Good Luck!

Poor FG ~ it’s highly unlikely she’s going to get a hamster anytime soon. Thankfully , the neighbors have about 15 at their house (the haven’t figured out how quickly they mulitply) so FG can go there and play with them anytime. Now, I’m trying to figure out if Sport needs another dog to keep him company – he’s been so lonely without Bennett. And there are so many available at GAIN.

FG girl has me laughing out loud at her antics! I remember her asking about a hamster while you lived here! Stephanie

Glad the girl is thinking about MATH! Maybe she should think about the probability of the colors of the babies because you know it will have babies . . . funny Kahne mentioned that about her preggo hamster. Can’t beleive you gave her a 60% . . . that is way too high! What does her daddy say? I can only imagine he is making it even harder on you and helping the girl with her stragey. Good Luck . . . keep us posted.

I had a hamster growing up (this story probably will NOT increase probabilities for FG) and it turned out to be preggos. So then I had lots of hamsters. And, um, it commonly bit. But maybe it was just a mean one. I did rescue a squirrel once (it had a broken leg) and it turned out to be one of the best pets ever – and I hear they can be nasty. So maybe it is just that small rodent like animals have different temperaments just like big ones. Tell her to be picky….
