Our days of sand and sun are limited. FM was selected for a Battalion Command, and if you’re wondering where we’re moving, let me give you a hint: it’s a very cold there right now and it’s NOT Alaska. You got it ~ Ft. Drum in Upstate New York! We’ll be moving in July and I’m already stressing about transporting the dogs. I think I have a “foster” home (thanks Dave) for them for a couple of months ~ I have to send them before the airlines impose the heat embargo for the summer and my friend, Dave, is an even bigger dog lover than me. Hard to believe, I know.
It’s a fabulous opportunity for FM but it’s taken me a full week to wrap my brain around the fact that I’m having to move again so soon and I’m very sad to be leaving this beautiful tropical location. I’ve become accustomed to wearing flip flops all the time and, I’m sure you’ve already gathered, I love being a beach bum!
If anyone has a great new name for my blog, let me know. Maybe I’ll make a contest out of it and have a prize for the winner. 😉
So, Fort Drum is upstate New York. I hunted a bit to find out where you lived up here, Patti. Wow. Gorgeous in the summer, among the nicest in the world, I think. Winter, not so much. Syracuse is warmer and has less snow than Watertown/Fort Drum by truckloads, and still I say this.

Congratulations to you on command!!! That is really great news!!! I couldn’t be more jealous of your assignment too. We have family in New York and New Jersey. Ft. Drum would be a great assignment for us. Good Luck and I’ll be thinking of a new catchy name for your blog 🙂

KGB: I had a crash course in all things Army when I worked in Protocol but I’m a little lost now with the new uniforms. When they’re inside, it’s hard to see the rank at all.

I so remember first being married and trying to sort out the what makes up what? power grid that is the Army. I’ve pretty much gotten that down now, but I am always asking T – “Okay, it was a guy with 2 little bars up and two little bars down – what’s that?” (or something like that).
For the new blog name – hmmmm, maybe “Welcome to my world” which is totally how I feel with all of the sudden changes that the Army brings on. First you’re in lovely Germany, then the beautiful Guam, and now off to Drum. As the girl would say “Woo-wee”!

Raquel: Thanks for the kind words. Stay tuned for more “Boonie Stomp” entries. We’re determined to get the “t-shirt” and have 5 stomps to do before we leave in July.
T & J: A Battalion can have anywhere from 300-1000 people. John’s will have around 600. A battalion (commanded by a Lieutenant Colonel) usually has 4 companies (commanded by Captains) and is part of a brigade (commanded by a Colonel). The brigades then make-up a division (commanded by a Major General ~ two stars). He’s looking forward to the challenge.

Patti – this news makes me sad. I have enjoyed reading about your island adventures. But if there is a silver lining we may be able to come and visit. A ticket for all 4 of us to Guam is a bit out of reach – however, a road trip to upstate NY – I am sure we can manage! I hope you matain your blog – yours has been inspiration for me along with several other people I know. I agree with Raquel – you are a clever writer.

I have become a fan of your blog via L13, and I’m a bit sad to learn that you are leaving the island. I am from Guam, so your blog has been refreshing to read. Thank you for sharing your experiences on Guam; there are places you have been that even I have yet to discover on my own island.
Good luck to you, and please post your new blog when you can. You are a clever writer.

Nicole: I’m being VERY selfish and keeping my fingers crossed that you end up at Drum. I say selfish because I know you’re hoping for Hawaii or an equally warm climate 😉 Now. if we could get K & G Jones there, too, that’d be great.

Yay! Well I guess that depends on your opinion of Fort Drum but it’s good to know that someone familiar is in a place we’ll likely be sent. (that or about 2 other options 🙂 That’s the Army for you…a total 360 from Guam. Lol!
