Looks like tropical storm Kong Rey is heading right for Guam. The storm currently has 50 mph winds which extend out 85 miles from the center. It’s expected to intensify into a typhoon by morning and may hit Guam on Tuesday around 6 am. For a very witty account of storm preparations and a storm tracking map, check out The Parker Pens.
We’re finishing up with the last of the laundry and vacuuming. I think we’re as ready as we can be. Of course, I’m more than a little worried about the dogs at GAIN. They are not well protected from the winds or rain.
Heidi: Good luck to your husband re:the teaching position. We’ve really enjoyed living here in Guam and are sad to be leaving in June.
There are a couple of places to find organic/health foods: Commissary, Payless Stores, Healthy Hearts, Simply Foods and Nuts and Grains.
Simply Foods is particularly good BUT you must be careful to check the expiration dates on the products. I don’t think they get enough turnover which is too bad because their selection is good! They also serve Vegetarian lunches weekdays. The restaurant and grocery store are in the same building.
Let me know if you’d like any other info.

I love your blog (I found it by googling “Guam Blog”)! My husband’s applied to teach for DoDDS, and we listed Guam as one of the place we’d be interested in living.
I wondered whether there’s much organic/natural food available at the commissary or any local grocers (produce, breads/flours, etc.). We aren’t vegetarians, but we do eat a pretty clean diet and especially want our kids to continue eating healthily.
If you get a minute, I’d love to get your input. Good luck with the typhoon (we had fun with those when I lived in Taiwan). Thanks!
