I’m the one who hangs the clothes back in the closets after washing them so I know both Favorite Man (FM) and Favorite Girl (FG) have favorite clothes that get worn over and over again. The other clothes are neglected and collecting dust in the closet, but I can’t get either one of them to purge the unused items.
The other day I was watching a organization show and saw a tip for figuring out what clothes are NOT being worn without too much effort. Since I can’t get either FM or FG to go through their closets, I’m going to give this a try. Here are the basics:
Hang all hangers “backwards” in the closet. Then as clothes get worn, washed and put back, hang it right side in the closet. After six months to a year, check the backwards hanging clothes & give away to charity. Of course, this doesn’t apply to “special occasion” clothes. Click here for additional information from Peter Walsh, organizing guru.
Has anyone tried this? I’ve sold the idea to FG and we’re starting the project today, but I haven’t even approached FM, he likes symmetry and is going to have a hard time even seeing the mismatched hangers.
I love the hanger idea for myself. I’m with Alice. I just sneak stuff out of the house when no one is looking. I feel blessed I got T to clean her room before Alice came to visit. Bonus, I figured out how to get her to keep it clean. It has been 2 weeks now! I don’t want to face any closet inspections from Uncle Jamie either!!

Hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving with family and friends.
Kay: We eat all the non-meat items i.e. mashed potatoes, green beans, cranberry sauce, vegetarian stuffing, salad, sweet potatoes, etc.

Patti-
How do you celebrate Thanksgiving? My simple mind can not imagine what you do for Thanksgiving for yourself and FG!?
Happy T-Day!

Hey Beth – I have been saving tshirts from our kids activities and would love to know how to make this exact type of quilt!!
Patti – can you either give Beth my email address or forward hers to me???
I am not sure where to begin with this project but need to get started on R’s – I have 4 .5 years before he graduates – I should get started now!!!!

I’m kind of the opposite–I love throwing away stuff! Sounds weird, I know, but I get more pleasure out of cleaning out than adding. I have been known to look for something years after it’s gone and not remember getting rid of it. If D. can’t find something, his first question is, “Did you throw it away?”
All of D’s clothes fall into two categories: sentimental and can’t get rid of, or still good and can’t get rid of. Doesn’t matter if it hasn’t gotten unpacked in 3 moves. To make room in his drawers, I took out all the old t-shirts that he couldn’t bear to part with, but were just sitting there. From school, sports, races, units, etc. I found 32 and made a double-sided quilt out of them so he could save the memories. It is the ugliest thing I’ve seen, but he could never part with it!

Remind me never, ever show you our closets if you come to visit. =)
Uncle Jamie: Maybe this whole family should spend time in the army. =)
Its not that there is no desire to be more organized, its kind like shopping in TJ Max – its just too overwhelming !! = P

Alice: LOL very sneaky indeed!

I know it’s a little sneaky, but I tend to donate cloths and toys that are not being used little by little. No one notices if a few things have gone missing. Although Tony is still looking for his peach parachute pants from 1983. I am taking the 5th on that one.

I saw that hanger tip too, thought it was so simple but brilliant!

When I was in the Army all hangers had to be the same way.

Love catching up on your blog. Unfortunately only do so every 2-3 weeks, but still keeps me up on ya’ll’s comins and goins. But have to comment in one fell swoop. Love the hanger idea (organization mavens always amaze me), but doubt I’ll try. Just a “What Not to Wear” perfect candidate, with hard to release stuff! Give away a ton to thrift & still have trouble parting with things with some sentimental value. Still have the t-shirt from our trip to America’s Cup in San Diego from ’92 & various, assundry Coke & Teton duds. Sad & destined for the rag bag, but true. (Think I can drum up those daisy dukes we had our sights set on fitting back into quite some time back?? :))
Thanks for the notes on Veteran’s Day and our lost Soldiers (& even All Souls Day) – just a reminder we all need sometimes. Especially right now for those of us not in the Military world that somewhat overlook VD and it’s importance & the loss of those fighting. Seeing it on the news – tho sad – is very different from living it every day. Thanks for the kick in the patoot!!
As for Bond – first movie comment was very appropot as I saw my first one with my dad not long before he passed away & was of course Connery – so he forever will represent 007 in my eyes. But did like Brosnan – never liked him before & poopooed the idea of him as a Bond, but thought he was pretty durn nifty & held up his part. Was kinda sad to see him go so quickly, but Craig is cool, too. Yes, not so polished and very sexy. Only challenge is – Bond is supposed to be exeedingly polished with a devil’s edge – it’s what always set him apart from Rambo, Bourne, Terminator, Mission Impossible et. al. Lots of action pics – but only one Bond! Will probably wait for Netflix on my giant 13″ screen – Not the same impact, but will get the gist :). Has to be pretty compelling these days to get me to the theater with a popcorn and Coke the price of Fort Knox. Tho to this day an aroma reminder of my days working the Auburn Tiger Theater in college. Funny!
Last, and I’ll end with THANKS!!! Guess I can never be called sweet again. Durn it! Loved all the feedback on your ‘misunderstood’. Can just imagine – and chuckled a bit about creating a monster – the look on the woman’s face. Wanted to make you tougher, but GEEZ! Just a clue – unless a faseious smirk is written all over their face – usally sweet is a compliment – even for adults. Probably more YOU misunderstood & read more into her comment than vice versa. Don’t be so testy, girfriend. They didn’t know her from Adam’s house cat. Her bright and energetic & helpful & blah, blah just translated to sweet in their lingo. Believe, that down here in the very deep South, I’ve been called sweet more than a few times. And grinned ear-to-ear. Not usually the term for me. But a very Southern term – meaning nice or pleasant or entertaining or helpful. Not dim! Take a breather! And if you can think of 2 adjectives that could best desribe me, I’d love you to share, cuz I’m at a toal loss. I’m sure after this, your readers can help. :):) Edgy, yes, I am. But way more to the mix. And loved your mom’s summation of you – appropriate. But way short of the mark. I’d have trouble stopping at 25 adjectives! Most of them good :):):):). xoxo & hugs to FG & FM & Favorite Mom! Happy early Thanksgiving to you & all your readers!

I think it’s a good idea and will try it myself, while I am turning the hangers I might even get some cloths out of the closet.
