Flashback Friday: Palau February 2007

Two years ago, we were spending the President’s Day weekend in Palau. From Guam, Palau is only a two hour flight and had we stayed longer than one year in Guam, I would have gone back to Palau as often as possible. For a beachbum, it IS paradise.

On our way to the Rock Islands:

Favorite Girl at the “Milky Way”:

Touring the Rock Islands:

All last week, I searched Expedia, Travelocity and Orbitz for a cheap getaway to Puerto Rico, St Thomas, Orlando and Charleston but all flights/hotels were too much for just a couple days. So instead, we’re embracing the winter and heading further north. We’ll be stimulating the Canadian economy this weekend…

All my Flashback Fridays are going to be “beach” flashbacks until I feel warm again 😉 Favorite Girl and I really enjoyed kayaking off of Cocos Island in Guam and I’ve often thought a kayak trip to Baja Mexico would be a fun family trip. But then again, a return visit to Guam would be even better.

Tuesday Teasers

Here’s how the Tuesday Teaser works:  Grab your current read.  Let the book fall open to a random page.  Share with us two (2) sentences from that page, somewhere between lines 7 and 12. You also need to share the title of the book you’re getting your “teaser” from … that way people can have some great book recommendations if they like the teaser you’ve given!  If you have your own blog, post it there and leave a link or just leave the teaser in the comment section.

Outliers: The Story of Success by Malcolm Gladwell from page 211

But then, as it happens, from miles out, the captain sees the lights of Guam.  So he relaxes.

How funny that I opened to a page with Guam as an example.  One more reminder of the sun and fun I’m missing so much right now.

Back to the book ~Outliers refers to men and women who do things that are out of the ordinary.  I’m only a couple of chapters into it but I’m enjoying it so far. The book is his theory as to why some people succeed significantly more than others.  He has some very interesting thoughts on why people are more successful than others.

What are you reading these days?

Feb 14th thru the 21 is National Salute to a Hospitalized Veteran Week

There are many veterans who are hospitalized but I’m getting the word out about one in particular. He’s a soldier who was injured while on a deployment in Iraq in early 2007. He was attached to FM’s unit at the time and he continues to recover from injuries he sustained, injuries which required having a leg amputated.
This young man lost more than a leg ~ his wife left him and he’s lost touch with many friends due to his extended stay in the hospital.  He certainly could use a little cheering up and, more importantly, a reminder he’s not forgotten.
If you want to send a card and/or a care package, please leave a comment or email me directly and I’ll send his address.

With all this snow and cold, I’ve been flashing back to those wonderful days at the beach when we lived in Guam. I was tan, in-shape, warm and happy! The long weekend is coming up and Favorite Man wants to go to Canada to ski. All I can think of is flying somewhere warm ~ too bad there isn’t a non-stop from Syracuse to Puerto Rico!

I wish there was a pause button for life (wasn’t that a recent movie?)! Time is whipping by and I’m not keeping up. My Favorite Girl turned 11 and she’s speeding toward the teen years. Her birthday celebration included a sleep-over with 4 of her bestest friends.  Pizza and cake at night with Dunkin Donuts for breakfast.  Seems like the theme was “no  nutrition”

Tubing was scheduled for the next morning but the sub-zero temps canceled that plan. I couldn’t help but think about FG’s 9th birthday which we celebrated in Guam at the Tarza Waterpark ~ way too much fun!

gods behaving badly

I won the book, gods behaving badly written by Marie Phillips, in a giveaway by Books on the Brain. What a treat. It arrived while I was reading the Twilight series so it got put to the side until I finished with those books.

Summary of the book: 12 Greek gods, with waning powers, living in modern day London, all cramped into a dilapidated house they’ve lived in since 1665. The gods are bored, cranky and petty. Add in 2 mortals in a race to save humankind and you’ve got a very interesting read. Not only did I get a good chuckle, but it sparked an interest in re-learning my Greek mythology. I recognized the well known gods i.e. Apollo, Aphrodite, Artemis, Ares, etc. But there were a few I had to look up. Click here if you want a refresher of  The Olympians.  My favorite is Artemis (goddess of hunting) with Dionysus (god of wine), who owns a sleazy bar called Bacchanalia, being a close second.

Each god has a job that coincides with their talents. Artemis is a dog walker and is always on the look-out for a dog with some feistiness left in him/her. She’s thrilled when she finally gets to tangle with Cerberus, the three-headed dog of Hades (god of the underworld).  Here’s a passage about Artemis’ search for a “real” dog:

There were dogs all around, on leashes, and Artemis tried to catch their eyes, hoping to detect some wolfish spark, some indication that they knew their heritage, but they were all the same – fat, lazy, dull. There was no point. No true dog would allow itself to be tethered to a human anyway.

Apollo (god of the sun and a gift of prophecy) has a TV psychic show, Aphrodite (goddess of Love and Beauty) is a sex phone operator.  And so it goes.  The power of belief  is a main theme of the book, but be warned, there are several unsettling comments “against” Jesus and God which comes from the point of view of the gods.  In the end, the book is a light farce and a romantic comedy.

After reading the vampire series (4 books) and about the Greek gods, I’m in serious need of a more realistic novel. Any suggestions for a “feel good” story based in reality?

Loving the New Job

It’s been over a month since I started my new job and I’m loving it. I’m still having a time-management problem which is mainly because I try to do too much before work and during my lunch hour. My mom has been here about a month and we’ve all come to rely on her so much. Favorite Man even called her the other night with his dinner order 🙂 It’s going to be an adjustment when she leaves tomorrow. We’re already making plans for a return visit this summer. She’s only been here during the winter months and I think it’s only fair she should see the area during the beautiful summer and fall seasons. Unlike these crazy winter months…

As I was walking into work the other morning and the temperature was -13, I was thinking how oblivious I was last year with regards to the weather. If it was snowing or too cold, I just stayed inside by the fire. I honestly thought the winter wasn’t so bad and couldn’t understand why some people complained so much. Now that I have to actually get out in the elements, I have a whole new opinion about the weather. No doubt, I will appreciate the warmer weather even more now.

Speaking of delusional, I need to purchase warmer work clothes and, for the briefest moment, I thought “Well, it’s already the middle of January so maybe I can make it through to spring” and then I remembered we skied through March and it didn’t warm up until June. Surely, it would be a wise investment to buy more winter gear.

Back to the job ~ it’s been great so far and we’re getting busier which I prefer to the holiday lull we just went through. My boss is very competent which translates into a smooth running office ~ at least for me. There’s nothing worse than a boss who flails around and you have to pick up the slack.

Originally, I was worried about taking the job because I’m very involved in the Family Readiness Group (FRG) and thought people might think I was “abandoning” them. BUT I’ve found I’m an example to some of the spouses who now see that I can still participate in the FRG and work a full-time job. I’ve noticed several new faces at the unit get-togethers and they all want to know about my new position. A couple have even mentioned getting involved in the FRG. WOW! It’s an unexpected but welcome reation to my working.

Feeling A Lot Less Guilty

Thanks to Books on the Brain, I’m feeling a lot less guilty about my all-consuming weekend of reading. Since I started reading Twilight and New Moon, I’ve been neglecting Favorite Man, Girl and Grandma Betty. Only the dogs were happy with my reading since they got to lay next to me and got petted occassionally.  Feeling guilty, I decided to stop reading my book and checked out what was happening in the blog world. Yeah, I know ~ that’s just more reading and neglecting BUT thankfully, I popped into Books on the Brain, which is my usual first stop, and was thrilled to see I’m not the only one “escaping” into a book.

Yet another reason why Books on the Brain is one of my favorite blogs ~ if you’re a reader and haven’t checked it out, I recommend you head over and give it a read.

The good thing about reading is Favorite Girl likes to curl up with me and read at the same time. And she’s thrilled that we can talk about the story of Edward and Bella. 😉 Although she doesn’t always like my take on things…

Happy New Year!

For the second year in a row, we spent New Year’s eve just down the street with our friends and neighbors. It’s so nice to do something in the same location for a second year in a row. Some of our friends here laugh that we’re so excited to be settled for a few years. A surprising number of army families have managed to stay here for 5, 6 and even 9 years. That’s almost unheard of for a military family, but not here.

Being at the party was fun but there’s always such an undercurrent of  mixed emotions at every military get-together ~ at least here, the most deployed division in the army. There was a couple who were recently reunited after he’d been away in Iraq for 15 months (very content), there was a friend whose husband is currently away but he’ll be home within the month (very happy) and then there was the couple whose husband is leaving in 3 days for a year (melancholy). I’m grateful, unless things change drastically, that Favorite Man isn’t going anywhere for a year. And yet, I couldn’t help but think  I’ll be the melancholy one next New Year’s Eve.

We left the party about 10 minutes BEFORE midnight so we could come home to watch the ball drop at Times Square with my mom.  She didn’t want to go out into the freezing temps nor the snow so she stayed at home. No doubt enjoying the peace and quiet. Not sure if she appreciated our raucous return, Favorite Girl was especially keyed up.

Favorite Girl is on her last day of Christmas break. She’s anxious to get back to her friends at school. She truly loves going to school! How I hope that will last for many, many years! We found out recently her three closest friends are moving at the end of the school year. Ah, the army lifestyle ~ even if you get to stay, someone else has to move.  In preparation for what is sure to be a sad beginning to summer break, I’m working on her summer plans. Favorite Man is interested in taking a “big” trip somewhere warm and FG is begging to go to overnight camp. Unfortunately, the camp she’s decided she wants to go to is for a minimum of 3 weeks! Yikes, I miss her too much when she’s at a sleep-over. Three weeks would be too much for me to handle. Isn’t 10 too young for overnight camp? I was 12 or 13 before I went away to camp.  Any suggestions or comments are always welcome!

I, too, was keyed up after the party so I stayed up finishing Twilight. Didn’t get to sleep until after 4 am. So unlike me but I really enjoyed the book. FG is pushing me to start the next book in the series, New Moon,  but I don’t want to get “vampire” overload. Plus, I really need to finish Me Talk Pretty One Day… where were all these good books BEFORE I started working and had so much more time to read?

Wishing everyone a HAPPY & HEALTHY New Year!
