Travel Reading Meme

Books on the Brain tagged me for a reading meme because she wanted book recommendations for an upcoming road-trip. Unfortunately, it’s been such a crazy week and this is my first chance to reply. She’s probably already completed the trip ~

I haven’t been reading a lot. Who knew we would move to the North Country and have a great social schedule. There’s always something going on and the people here like to get out to do things. Reminds me of Germany where the weather doesn’t hold anyone back ~ I’ll never forget the 80+ woman in Mantel (Bavaria) riding her bike, while the snow fell and all the while with a cigarette in her mouth. As I drove by her, I thought to myself, I’ll never complain about being out in the snow. If she can get out and ride a bike, I can get out in the snow as well!

Back to the meme:

(1) What book are you reading right now?  Garlic and Sapphires by Ruth Reichl  This book was reviewed on Books on the Brain and, even though the review was mixed, I decided to give it a try since I’m a “foodie”. It’s about a food critic who disguises herself when she goes to a restaurant so she won’t get better treatment. Having worked at resorts, I remember the travel writers and the all important quest to be a “FIVE” star. There was one travel writer from a well respected newspaper who not only told us she was coming to review the hotel but, her assistant called to let us know the writer was a big fan of the TV show Twin Peaks (yes, this was back in early 90’s). Seeing as I lived on the small island Lanai in Hawaii, worked 7 days a week, 18 hour-days for several months in order to open the resort and had very little time for TV, I was clueless about the show. I laugh just thinking about the conversation my boss and I had over the writer’s arrival. We couldn’t figure out why’d we would want to serve her cherry pie in Hawaii. There was something big about cherry pie in the plotline but seeing as we were in a TV vacuum and remember, this was before the internet, we had no idea what the fuss was all about.

Bottom line, we decided to do nothing out of the ordinary ~ she would experience the hotel just like every other guest. That resort “The Lodge at Koele” was a big hit, was rated #1 for years on the Conde Nast Travelers list and is now a “Four Seasons” resort.  Hey, maybe instead of reading a book about a reviewer, I should write a book about being on the other side of those reviews.  There are very few travel writers I would trust and prefer the everyday traveler reviews at sites such as Tripadvisor.

2) What was the last book you read on an airplane?  Years ago, when FG was still small enough to fall asleep in her own seat, I read John Adams by David McCullough.  I no longer read novels on planes because FG spreads herself across my seat/lap and I end up reading magazines because it’s too uncomfortable to concentrate. Back to the book, I highly recommend it. It is a fascinating story of John and Abigail Adams and I was in awe of both of their contributions to our country. Both of the Adams were so smart and selfless. Always thinking of the good of the country. It was also in the book that I found out both John Adams and Thomas Jefferson died on 4 July, 1826.  So ironic.

3) What was the last book you read on a road-trip? Can’t remember. I’m usually driving or reading newspapers/magazines.

4) Where is the most unusual place you found yourself reading? Palau ~ it was such an exotic locale.

5) What books would you take to keep you occupied on a 2 week vacation to the beach? I would take the following books for a two week vacation: The Time Traveler’s Wife, The Zookeeper’s Wife, The Street of a Thousand Blossoms.

Has Anyone Seen My Walkman?

Since I’ve started going to the gym three days a week, I’ve noticed I’m the frumpiest dressed one there. Most of the women are wearing cute exercise pants and matching tops ~ which not only shows off their toned bodies but looks so comfortable. They don’t look like they’re on the prowl ~ they just look good.

I, on the other hand, am still wearing my gym style from the 80’s. No, not the same clothes, just the same style ~ long t-shirt, shorts, tube socks.  And if you think I’m being too hard on myself, at a party the other night, my gym partner commented that I should get an Ipod. Since FM knows about my gym style, he chimed in with “You don’t need an Ipod, you need a Walkman to go with your outfit.”  🙂

Maybe I should wait for legwarmers to make a comeback?

Skinny Skiing

Although I had more than a few things to do around the house, I decided to join a friend on a cross-country ski this morning. We headed out about 10:30 on a trail here on Ft. Drum. 3 miles and 2 hours later, with very tired legs, a hurt knee and more than a little exhausted, we made it back to Outdoor Recreation Office.

The last time I was on cross country skis was about 20 years ago when I lived in Wyoming where the trails were wide and out in the open fields. I must have blocked from my memory how much of a workout it is. The trail we went on this morning was narrow and needs another 6-12 inches of snow. There was a lot of exposed rock along the route as well as my poles kept getting caught in the brush. If you look closely at the photo, you’ll see snow on my hat as well as on my pants. On one of the hills, as I was going down, my ski got caught on a rock and I went face forward ~ literally, a face plant. And I hit my knee on another rock. I kept asking myself if I was having fun yet?

Will I go out again? Of course! It can only get better right? But I’ll be waiting for another snowstorm before trying that trail again.

Double Digits!

FG turned 10 today and thoroughly enjoyed her day. There was a 2-hour snow delay and we made ice cream cone cupcakes for her classmates ~ big hit! Just before we headed out to school, balloons were delivered from Grandma B. Pink and Purple, just like the colors of her room.

Because of the delay, I was able to give her a “birth minute kiss” at 10:29 am. It’s a tradition we try to do every year. Last year, I made sure I volunteered in her class so I could be there at 10:29. I can tell this is going to get harder and harder to keep up as the years go by.

Although she didn’t get the Ipod or American Girl Doll she had listed on her birthday gift wish list, FG got flowers, “The Daring Book for Girls” book and the DVD “Holes.” She loves that movie and I’ve yet to see the whole thing. It looks so strange to me.

Hard to believe 10 short years ago, this angel of a girl came into our lives. She’s such a joy to have around…

Happy Birthday, Favorite Girl!

Ski Season is Here

Looks like skiing is the sport of choice for both FM and FG. Yesterday, we drove the short 45 minutes to Snow Ridge Ski area in Turin, NY. The snow was great with more falling as we were there. I chose not to participate since I don’t have any of the equipment I need for the slopes ~ not even ski pants.

I think back to 20 years ago when I first learned to ski. Longer was better as far as skis go but now shorter is all the rage and so much easier to control your way down the slopes. I used the shorter skis when we went to Garmisch, Germany and it made such a huge difference in the control.

Snow Ridge offers both private and semi-private lessons which I will take full advantage of once I get all my equipment ~ it takes a lot to be outfitted for skiing. There’s the clothes, the skis, poles, goggles, face mask for bone chilling days like yesterday, and, of course, what I refer to as the torture boots. All that stuff while attempting to look good without breaking the bank. Thankfully, there are lots of ski swaps going on around town and we won’t have to shell out a fortune (I hope).

One thing I’ve never tried is night skiing ~ we’re going to attempt it sometime in the next couple of weeks. Well, that’s if I can even see. It might be a little tough with my poor night vision, glasses and goggles.

Hmm…I really need to look into lasik surgery.

We went to the see the Flint Creek Band at the USO on Ft. Drum last night.

Not only are they a great country band and the dance floor was packed the whole time, but they have hearts of gold. The band sponsored a platoon in Iraq and they sent LOTS of packages with goodies, cds, and even miscellaneous medical supplies to help the locals. The band also made a CD of their original songs for the members of the platoon. I spoke with a couple of guys who were in the platoon and they said the band was a super sponsor!

FM said a few words on behalf of the Battalion, presented a certificate of appreciation and battalion coins then three of the soldiers who were recipients of the packages got on stage and presented the band with a framed US Flag which flew in Iraq. It was very touching…

I got goosebumps when the band’s manager, Shannon, said she was so relieved the guys were back home since she felt such a bond with them. But they weren’t allowed to call her “mom” since she’s too young for that 🙂 It so warms my heart when I meet such supportive and giving people ~ we hear so much negative on TV and in print but there really are lots of genuine folks out there like the Flint Creek band who make a huge contribution to the soldiers.

A BIG thanks to the band from me!!

Will You Be My Friend?

I feel like I’m back in grade school when I move to a new place and I’m on the lookout for an exercise partner but it doesn’t stop me from asking. I’m a firm believer in having an exercise buddy but due to my surgery and then the holidays, I haven’t asked anyone until my neighbor mentioned she was heading to the gym. That was my opportunity to ask “I’m searching for a exercise buddy ~ are you interested?” and she said “YES!”

Being a borderline germaphobe, I’m not much of a gym person and prefer the great outdoors but since the weather limits the amount of outdoor exercise I can endure, the gym will have to do.  Yesterday was our first day and although we won’t work out together (she runs way faster than I), just the fact that we’ll drive to the gym together is incentive enough to get me exercising. I did the stair master and weights ~ ouch! A good ouch though.  I’ll still be swimming but, since I’m no longer training for the team triathlon, my new rule is swimming only if the outside temps are above freezing.

And when the weather gets nice enough, we’ll switch to tennis!

Hope everyone out there has an “exercise buddy” or finds one soon.

Gotta Keep Moving…

Here in the North Country, during the winter, you gotta keep moving or you freeze up. I’ve kept my resolution of staying active by trying new things.

I started swimming at the indoor pool here on base. While swimming isn’t new for me ~ swimming in a pool is. I much prefer the ocean to a pool. Ft. Drum has two indoor pools but I prefer the one at Pine Plains Gym. They have women only hours M-F from 9-11. It’s very convenient for me to get a swim workout BUT the hardest part is actually getting in the pool. The water is soooo cold. I warm up as soon as I swim one length of the pool and the cold water is a huge incentive for me to get moving FAST. Initially, I was training for a team triathlon in May but we are short a bicyclist. I’m going to keep training in case we find one. Always good to have an exercise goal.

My second new thing this month is we, all three of us and a friend of FG’s, went to the Friday night USO Boot Scootin Dance lessons. Oh, my…I certainly got my exercise but it WASN’T pretty at all. They teach line dancing and have a mix of country and hip hop music. There were a lot of kids there and several adults as well. Normally, we are booked on Friday nights but I’ll certainly go back when ever we have a free night. FG will definitely go but I doubt FM will make a return appearance. He did a great job dancing but it’s really not his kind of music or his kind of fun.

Most of the adults passed on the limbo. See photo of FG below:

The House Feels So Empty

Grandma Betty has only been gone for a couple of hours but the house already feels so empty without her. She’s a joy to have around and so incredibly helpful. It’s always times like this that I wish family lived close and, by close, I mean within a 1 hour driving range. Don’t know if I can talk her into moving to the frozen north country but I’ll keep trying.

Grandma Betty was a good sport during several games of Cranium (thanks Heidi) as well as a contentious game of Hearts. I believe the Jess cousins will agree with me when I say FM’s mean streak at games can be a bit much for a nine year old.

The good news is, we’re only about a six hour travel time by plane (including the stopover in Charlotte) to her house instead of the 9+ hours to Germany or the 22+ hours to Guam. I may need a “warm-up” weekend sometime in March when it’s still freezing here but warm in North Carolina so it won’t be too long before we see her again.

Another family member will be coming here soon and we’re looking forward to her visit ~ should be fun!!

Sport is styling…

I go for warmth and comfort when I dress during the winter. It’s definitely a matter of function over fashion. Come spring and summer, I have no doubt people will ask how much weight I lost because I look so much heavier with the TONS of baggy clothes I wear to stay warm.

Thanks to my friend and fellow dog-lover Dave, Sport was able to stay warm during our double digit sub-zero temperatures last week ~ the lowest we saw on the thermometer was -12. And he looked darned handsome while he stayed warm, don’t you think?
