Soggy Doggie Days

The rainy season is back which makes all of us want to curl up inside. Bennett took advantage of the rainy day yesterday and enjoyed a snooze on ‘his’ couch.  This couch, which I’ve been trying to get rid of since FM and I got married, originally belonged to FM’s company commander. His company commander’s wife hated the couch since it was her husband’s college bachelor furniture and she told FM he could have it if he hauled it away.  That was in 1991! Well, over the years, Bennett has claimed it for his own so we’ve kept it for him.

And since it’s been raining too hard and for too long, FG insisted on putting up the hammock inside. I have to admit, she does look very comfortable 🙂

World Vegetarian Day

Today is World Vegetarian Day and I’ve even talked my meat and potatoes husband into participating.

If anyone else wants to give up meat for a day or for even just one meal, there are some great recipes at Vegetarian Times. The current magazine also has a couple of interesting articles: one on organic foods and another on how to deal with seasonal allergies.

I was warned

I was warned by my sister how easy it is to get “addicted” to golf and I just laughed.  Thankfully, I don’t have an addictive personality ~ everything in moderation is my motto ~ BUT I sure am having fun with golf.

After taking 3 lessons and a summer at the driving range, I finally made it out on the course yesterday for a round of 9 holes. It felt wonderful to spend a couple of hours with a cool breeze off the ocean and no one behind us pressuring us to play fast. We took our time and enjoyed the views. I had ‘par’ on only one hole, had to fight off several bumble bees and I certainly wouldn’t put my score in print but, all in all, it was great fun! So much so my new golf partner, T.S. and I set up a standing tee time every Tuesday for the next few months. We’ll keep the first scorecard to compare with our last one when we leave Guam in 3 years. We even dared to talk about entering a tournament once our scores improve a little and when we’re able to play faster.

Crazy Computer

My computer hard drive crashed this morning as I was reading my e-mail. I called the Compaq help desk and was told I would need recovery CDs which would be here in about five days. Interestingly, my “warranty” had just expired 9 days ago. Hmmm…sounds a little suspicious since the help desk person didn’t sound even remotely surprised at my description of what happened to my computer and he was all ready to sell me the extended warranty so I could speak to the more advanced tech dept agent. Well, I’m not one for waiting so I kept playing around with the computer and finally, by sheer brute force, got it to do a system recovery on it’s own. Who knows how long it will last.
Unfortunately, I lost everything in Outlook 😦 including e-mail addresses. If you’re someone I’ve e-mailed in the past, please send me a blank e-mail and I’ll add you back to my contacts list. Lesson learned: I’ll keep a hard copy of my e-mail addresses. So much for being paperless.

On this day of celebration, please take a moment to remember our Founding Fathers ~ men of wealth and means who sacrificed all they had for freedom. Most were wealthy landowners and lawyers who took a great risk signing the Declaration of Independence. They knew they would pay a high price but signed anyway. 30% of the signers had all their possessions confiscated.

It was not easy for them in 1776 just as it is not easy for those who continue to fight for freedom in 2006. Throughout these 230 years, the United States of America has been blessed with those willing to risk it all to fight tyranny and now terror. I celebrate, appreciate and am forever thankful to all those who protect our freedom and especially to those who have made the ultimate sacrifice.

“This nation will remain the land of the free only so long as it is the home of the Brave.” ~ Elmer Davis

Happy Father’s Day!

Happy Father's Day to all the great Dads who make each and every day special for their children, and to those who are father figures to children who need them.

It has been 19 years since I spent a Father's Day with my Dad. I miss him everyday but even more so on days like this. I adored my Dad ~ he was smart, funny, adventurous, athletic and a great judge of character. Here is one of my favorite photos of him with my sister. They both loved golf and spent a lot of time on the course:

For many years I couldn't bear to celebrate the day at all but now that I have a daughter of my own, I share my memories with her and we make the day she spends with her Dad very special. FG has inherited her Grandpa's love of golf:

I praise all those fathers who have died but who live on in our hearts and memories ~ their love will continue to nurture us for all our lives.
