Election Lesson

This spring, FG’s social studies teacher touched on the subject of elections. The Primary Season gave the teacher a lot of fodder to go over with the kids. FG said the teacher didn’t hide her preference for Hillary Clinton which came across more as a “yeah, there’s a viable woman running for president” than “I’m voting for a Democrat.”

So about a month ago, we had dinner at TGIFridays. After dinner, I wanted to stop at Pier One while FM needed somthing from Lowes. Both stores are close together so I told him to drop me off while he shopped at Lowes. We asked FG if she wanted to go with FM or with me and here’s the conversation that took place:

Favorite Girl (FG): Let’s look at this like an election. You can each state your case why I should vote for you. I’ll vote for the best one.

Favorite Man (FM): You should vote for me because I’ll be going to Lowes and you like to look through that store for plants and things.

Me: I’m going to Pier One and they have lots of fun, colorful things to look at ~ it’s much better than hanging out at Lowes.

FG: What else?

FM: I’ll be quick so you won’t get bored. I’ll make it more fun.

Me: If you vote for me, I’ll make sure to buy you something wonderful at the store. Did your teacher cover “campaign promises?”  There’s no guarantee I’ll actually buy you something, but in order to get your vote, I’ll put that out there as an incentive. Later, I can make an excuse as to why you don’t really want me to buy you anything.

FG: Oh…

Too cynical? What would you tell a 10 year old about the election process? I told FG a good way to judge how a politician will act in the future is not by what they say they’re going to do but how they’ve acted in the past and a good place to start is their voting record. Since our 2008 candidates are Senators, you can check their voting record here.  Sadly, even if you go back to 2007, there are a lot of “not voting” on the part of both Obama and McCain. I can see them not having time in 2008 to be present and vote but what’s up with their 2007 record?!

Flashback Fridays: One Year Ago

Last year, in July, we were driving our way across the US. Our road trip took us through Kansas and gave us a chance to meet up with some of our Army friends. The Dentes had us over for dinner and who knew that one year later, they would move to Ft. Drum and be our next door neighbors. The army world is indeed SMALL.

Another Army couple we were able to visit was the Z family.

We met them in 1995 when FM & F were Company Commanders together at Ft. Riley. They’ve “homesteaded” at Ft. Riley which is what we call it when a family gets to spend more than 4 or 5 years in one location. With the exception of one or two years, they’ve been there ever since we left. We have several families living at Ft. Drum who’ve been here for more than 7 years. It’s great for the kids ~ lots of stability.

As for FM & I, we don’t want to homestead just yet but, after moving every summer for the last three years, I’m thrilled to be staying put for a few years here in the North Country. And Favorite Girl is able to play with her friends this summer and she gets to participate in several day camps including a Lacrosse and Basketball camp. It’s a novelty for her to be able to stay at the same school come September.

Family Picnic

Actually, it’s traditionally called a “Pig Roast” but to make it more palatable to non-meat eaters such as FG & I, we started calling it the Family Picnic. It was a day of sunshine, good food and good company. There were lots of people to talk with ~ a lot whom we hadn’t seen in a long time as well as some I had never met. One thing about FM’s family, they do a really good job about gathering together whenever possible. There were aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews, etc. In fact, all three of FM’s siblings attended so the four were together again.

I don’t think my siblings have been all together in one place in decades!!

My MIL & FIL (in-laws) have done the Pig Roast a few times before and do a really organized event especially considering the number of people who attend. The food was delicious. My sister-in-law, JR & her husband, WR always make sure when we visit that there’s some type of yummy veggie dish for FG & I to enjoy. This time it was a summer pasta salad which tasted like it was direct from Italy ~ W. is not shy with the garlic which I love. I should have gotten the recipe but I was too busy eating it to ask.

A lot of FM’s relatives read my blog so it keeps them posted on what we’ve been up to ~ it’s so much easier  than having to remember what I’ve been up to since we last saw one another. In fact, I noticed my readership was way down on Saturday ~ I think half of them were at the Picnic.

In the 14 years, FM and I have been together, this was my first trip to Ohio in the summer and, I have to admit, it’s very pretty with all the flowers blooming and all the outdoor activities. We may have to visit more often in the summer…

Bowling for Soup

Last week was eventful week here at Ft. Drum with a festival called Mountainfest and an Air Show. Lots of fun stuff. At Mountainfest, they had a three act concert which included “Bowling for Soup” ~ FM has two of their CDs and we love their songs “Come Back To Texas” ,”1985.” and “The Girl All the Bad Boys Want”

The concert was great and the band was very entertaining and funny. They had to clean up their act as far as language ~ it must have been written into their contract because I know there are a couple of songs I have to skip when FG’s in the car.

During the concert, we ran into a Lieutenant who works with FM and is all of 23 or 24 years old. He told us he used to see Bowling for Soup, at local Texas venues, when he was still in High School. Which I refrained from asking “When? Last year?”

We scored some backstage passes and invited him to join us to meet the band. As we were in line, we started talking about the type of music I like to listen to and I told him what FG said about my IPod selections which was ” Mommy, why are all your songs either listed as alternative or rock?”

Well, a little while later, I quoted a line from the movie “EurpTrip” which really shocked him and he said “You’re awesome ~ high five.”  You should have seen the look on FG’s face. I know she thinks I’m pretty fun as far as moms go, but I could tell she was thrilled someone “young” thought I was awesome and now her favorite thing to say to me is “You’re awesome ~ high five”

I couldn’t have paid for a better endorsement!

5K Fun Run….

…or more like a fun stroll. FM’s unit put together a 5K Fun Run. They had several categories including: fastest male, fastest female, fastest couple and fastest family. It was both FG and my first 5K. We started out just fine but she went a bit too fast and ended on a whimper. I’m happy she finished though and we’ll practice before attempting another.

I really enjoyed it and will try another 5K where I’ll run on my own and not as a family unit. FM’s too fast for me and FG’s too slow. It’s the opposite of our skiing style ~ FG is too fast and FM is too slow. 😉

Do You Feel Lucky?

Lately, choosing a book to read has been difficult for me. Due to FM’s job and the number of people I come into contact with, I already have enough drama in my life and, now when I read, I want to escape with an uplifting, positive book. I’m already “emotionally spent” with real life. Unfortunately, all the recommended books I’ve heard about lately sound too intense: missing teenage girl, cancer (Belly of the Whale), dementia, failed marriages, and even leprosy (Moloka’i).  I finally settled on the book “Love Walked In” and ordered it from Borders last night.

After ordering the book, I popped over to Books on the Brain and saw that Hey Lady, Whatcha Readin’?  is having a huge 14 book giveaway contest! And there will be FIVE winners. I like those odds and, if I win 14 books, I’ll feel obligated to read them regardless of their content. Could be the answer to my “picking a book to read” dilemma.

If you’re looking for a few good books and are feeling lucky, click over to Hey Lady and enter to win. There are several different ways to enter so check it out.

Awards

As FG was running out the door to catch the school bus this morning, she threw a sheet of paper at me. It said there would be an award ceremony at 2:00 pm today and parents were invited to attend. Although I didn’t know the details, I’d gotten used to going to elementary school award ceremonies where every child gets some type of award ~ no matter what. So I rearranged my plans but, unfortunately, FM wasn’t able to get out of work.

Much to my surprise (and delight), FG has graduated into awards based on merit. As I was sitting through the music, art and Presidential Fitness awards, and FG’s name wasn’t called, I began to worry that perhaps FG wouldn’t get any awards and would feel bad that I made the trip there. Not that I was overly surprised that she didn’t excel in art or music ~ neither FM nor I have much of an aptitude for either.

But once they announced they were giving awards to the Honor Students, I knew she’d get one. Whew.

Then they announced the “Citizenship Award” ~ the principal said they asked each teacher to pick one student from their class who they thought was an exemplary example to other students and were most likely to be future leaders. I was thrilled when they called FG’s name and so was she. She told me later she was really hoping they’d call her name.

It’s a whole new ballgame now that the awards have to be earned. And, as much as I believe that awards should be earned, I did feel badly for those who didn’t get anything. I hope it motivates them to pursue one next year.

It Was Twenty Years Ago Today…

…FM reported for duty at Ft. Benning, Georgia and started his long career in the Army. I don’t write much about the Army, mostly because it’s not my profession and, when I do write about it, it’s strictly from an observer’s point of view.

I’ll make an exception today because I’m very proud of FM’s service to the country and his accomplishments. Not a day goes by that I’m not amazed at what these soldiers do. Things I know I couldn’t do ~ no matter how much physical training I endured.  For example, FM had his body armor vest on the table and I decided to move it. I kid you not, I couldn’t pick it up. It’s VERY heavy. As I stood there looking at it, I imagined all the soldiers who have to wear it all day in the heat while walking or running. I wonder if they have different weighted vest for skinny, frail people like me.

Not only are these men and women in the Army exceptional when it comes to physical endurance, they are mentally tough as well. Sure, there are some who don’t make the grade but they get weeded out rather quickly. For the most part, the ones I know are the take charge and get the job done types, all the while taking care of their battle buddies, too.

My decision to “marry into the military” brought an added benefit besides having a wonderful husband and a daughter who is my heart. It has allowed me the priviledge of living among true heroes.

Flashback Friday ~ Big Dogs

This photo is from a visit FM & I made 12 years ago to a friend’s home in Hawaii. I’m with Thurston which is one of two English Mastiffs my friend owned and, although I hadn’t met the dogs before, we became fast friends.

Claudia was the older of the two dogs and she would lay at the front door. When we got to the house, I leaned over her and rang the door bell. My friend called for us to come in so I stepped over Claudia and walked in. As I got to the kitchen, I realized FM wasn’t behind me. I went back out and he was still in the same spot. FM said: “She won’t let me in” Sure enough, every time FM tried to step over her, she growled. Don’t know if you’ve ever heard a mastiff growl ~ it’s low and deep and there’s no doubt, if you made her get up, there would be no bark, just bite. It’s the only time I’ve seen hesitation on FM’s part.

There are big dog people, small dog people and ‘no dog’ people. I definitely fall into the the big dog catagory. I’ve always loved the personality of those gentle giants.

My dream is, if we ever find a place to settle down, to have an English Mastiff AND an Irish Wolfhound. Imagine the dog food bill for those two. 😉 FM prefers a black lab ~ it’s his favorite dog of all. Guess we better plan on a place with lots of yard space.

Bonfire in June

It was my kind of day ~ hot and humid. It felt like my core body temperature was finally getting back to normal. I took FG and her friend out early in the morning to practice soccer ~ passing lay-ups. To cool down afterwards, they ran through the sprinkler and ate ice cream sandwiches. Good times.

Later in the afternoon, FM and I went to the Sackets Harbor Beer and Wine Fest. We didn’t get there until almost closing time which worked out well ~ discount rate to get in and we still had access to the beer and wine samples.

Post-fest socializing (we saw a lot of people from the post), we went to a friend’s house for a wonderful BBQ. The host was kind of enough to remember I don’t eat meat and she especially cooked Portobello mushrooms for me. Unfortunately, I put the plate of two deliciously marinated and grilled Portobello mushrooms down and when I turned back someone had taken stolen one of the mushrooms! Those carnivores omnivores, they want their meat and then some…

When we left the house, it was 80 but as soon as the sun went down, the chill came back and it was a nice night for a bonfire. If it continues like this, I would say this is ideal weather ~ warm during the day and cool enough to sleep at night.
