Night of the Arts and Lookalikes

Last night, FG’s art teacher hosted a fun “Night of the Arts” show. FG put me on the spot when she showed me her classroom’s board which had their artwork ~ all 16 of them. She asked me to choose the “best” one which really meant I was supposed to pick hers. I couldn’t see any of the names so I decided to go ahead and pick the one I thought was the most artistic and, thank goodness, it was hers 🙂

She loves her art class and especially likes her art teacher. The first thing I thought when I met him was he looks just like a California surfer dude. Think Spicoli from “Fast Times at Ridgemont High.” I mentioned this to FG once we got home and she said one of her classmates already told him “hey, you look like a surfer dude.”    Too funny.

It got me thinking about how much some people remind me of other people ~ famous or not. And they don’t have to look like them but it’s something about their character or mannerisms. The actress I’ve been most compared to is Dana Delany. She’s best known for being the nurse on China Beach.

Who do people compare you to?

Fitness Day

FG’s school hosted a Fitness Day yesterday. I volunteered to help out with one of activity stations and ended up spending 2.5 hours tossing balls, bending, and running around. I certainly got a good work-out and I’m feeling the burn today.  I kept waiting for FG’s class to come through but it ended up each class missed one station and it just so happened FG’s class missed the one I was at ~ Bummer! I did get to see her after the ‘Cool Down’ by the fire department:

The “cool down’, which consisted of being sprayed by the big water hose, was no doubt the favorite part of the day for the kids. The range on the hose was quite far so all the adults (and their digital cameras) were running in the opposite direction!  All in all, it was a fun way to spend the morning.

New cast

FG got her new and improved cast today ~ it’s great! Thankfully, she only needs a cast around her wrist and not above the elbow. What a difference that makes. She gets re-checked in a month. The service at the Orthopedic Department today was outstanding. We were seen on-time and received quick, competent service. When the doctor heard how she hurt her arm, he said his son has been begging for heelys.

Later, as FG was getting her cast, we heard the following exchange in the next room:

Doctor: You mean you let your son wear heelys WHILE he still had a cast on?

Little boy’s Dad: Um, yes, his mom wanted him to try them on and he was in the kitchen.

Doctor: I’m having a disconnect here ~ while he STILL has a cast on?

Little boy’s Dad: unintelligible muttering.

Too funny. These heelys are getting a bad reputation in the Orthopedic world.

For Sale: Used Pair of Heelys

For her birthday, FG begged for a pair of Heelys.  A lot of the kids wear them even though they’re banned from the school. Since that is all she wanted, I agreed with the stipulation that if we had to make a trip to the emergency room, she wouldn’t be able to use them anymore.

Fast forward one month and she’s using her heelys on the sidewalk and, unfortunately, must have caught a pebble or something because she fell forward and used her arms to stop her fall. We spent SIX hours in the emergency room on a Sunday afternoon and it turns out she did fracture her lower arm near the wrist.  She has a temporary cast and will get a permanent one on Friday.

The whole emergency room experience was probably more painful than the break itself. They need some serious time management and customer service classes for the medical staff. Personally, I could care less about a doctor’s bedside manner ~ I want someone competent and efficient. No need to chat me up with useless talk but I think they should be able to tell you if it’s going to be a 4-5 hour wait. I would have sent FM home so we both didn’t waste our time sitting in the waiting room. I’m known for questioning everything and had I not questioned the first set of x-rays, they wouldn’t have found the fracture. Even though I SPECIFICALLY told the nurse that FG was complaining about pain in her lower arm, they requested x-rays on her elbow. UGH. I always wonder what happens to people who are too intimidated to question the medical staff. And yes, I have to put up with their condescending answers because they don’t like being questioned by lay people but that doesn’t stop me one bit. It only makes me resolved to make them make it clear to me. I’ve already told FM (who hates to question the staff) that if I’m too incapacitated to talk, he better step up and be an advocate for me.

That said: I’m thankful that I have medical care and know that there are a lot of people who don’t have access to our kind of care. It could be a lot worse.

This will be FG’s fashion statement for the next week. She’s hoping for a red cast on Friday.

Career Day

Last week, the elementary school had Career Day and FG was thrilled to go to work with FM. She readily woke up at 3:45 am for “PT”, which luckily for her, was swimming at the Navy Pool. Don’t even ask about the early morning PT. FM and I have had many discussions about the horrendous hour in which his alarm goes off every morning.  While at “work” she checked her e-mail so she’s learning early about the necessities of checking e-mail ~ let’s hope she doesn’t request a blackberry for Christmas.

The photo below is the view from FM’s office. I can safely say it’s the best office view he’s ever had! Hard to beat viewing palm trees, the hills and, of course, the ocean. He really enjoys his work at the University and especially working with the cadets. While FG was in one of his classes, she was able to speak German with a cadet whose family lives in Germany. He was a little freaked out that she spoke so well. I was a little surprised she spoke with him because she’s a little shy about speaking to strangers in English let alone German. I wish she had more of a chance to practice the language.

Don’t know if you can tell, but we’re really enjoying our time here in Guam. Especially when we read about all the snow and cold in the NE. We had to put on a jacket the other night when it got into the mid-70s! Burr..

One thing we know for sure is, where ever we retire, there will be warm temps and a beach involved 😉

This year, I had a couple different ideas for FG’s birthday party but I couldn’t resisit having the party at a local waterpark called Tarza, since in the past, we always had to do indoor events. FM and FG have gone there several times but this was my first visit. It was a lot of fun. My favorite slide was the master blaster:

You sit in an inner tube and the water pushes you up to the other slides ~ sorta like a “inner tube lift.” I laughed so hard I thought the water might go up my nose 😉

A good time was had by all and this might have to be the birthday tradition while we’re here.

My Favorite Girl is NINE!

It’s hard for me to believe FG’s already nine! She’s been the joy of my life since I found out we were having her. And I couldn’t have asked for a better daughter if I had gone to the “children store” and picked her out myself.

This is how the German Kindergarten in Neunkirchen treated the children on their birthdays. They were Princess (or Prince) for the day ~ complete with crown and throne!

We had a German magician for her 5th birthday and he was such a hit with the children that we booked him again for her 6th birthday. Unfortunately, he wasn’t available for her 7th birthday (yes, she really wanted him there again) so I went with a substitute magician who was Italian. He was no “Zauberer” but he was funny enough for the kids. Our neighbor, Ryan laughed throughout the entire show. Below is FG with the German magician:

We have FG’s ninth birthday celebration scheduled for Saturday and I hope we can live up to past parties. It’ll be nice to celebrate in warm weather for once ~ since her birthday is in January there was always a fear of cancelling due to snow.  No chance of snow this weekend 🙂

Back to School

After having three weeks off, it’s back to school for FG today. She was more than ready to get back to her social life at school. So far, her school work this year hasn’t been challenging. Unfortunately, she’s resting on her laurels and I’m going to have to supplement her classwork at home.

FM’s been back at work for a week and now I have no excuses not to get started on all my projects and to-do lists.  I have lofty goals for the next six months so I’ll keep you updated as to how they all work out.

We’re even going to start Boonie Stomping again this Saturday.

When FM and I got married, we agreed to celebrate Christmas in our own home rather than travel during the holidays. It’s worked well for our family especially once FG arrived. She loves celebrating Christmas in her own home and we have many traditions. So many traditions that I’m having trouble keeping up with all of them. One of our Christmas traditions is my mom, Grandma Betty to FG, would come to our home and celebrate the holidays with us. My mom would travel to Germany, enduring the long flight and the cold, snowy weather to spend Christmas with us. Unfortunately, she won’t be coming this Christmas ~ at first it was because my in-laws will be visiting for Christmas and our house is too small for multiple visitors but now, my mom thinks the almost 24 hour flight time would be too much for her. As you can imagine, FG is very sad about this and continues to ask “When is Grandma Betty coming?”

We’ll have to start a new tradition where we visit Grandma Betty during a holiday so FG can have a new tradition ~ maybe the 4th of July!
