Happy St. Patrick’s Day!

We celebrated St. Patrick’s Day at a friend’s house which overlooks Pago Bay. Good food, good Guinness and great company. The ocean view from their place is gorgeous.

Hope everyone had a fun day!

Several people have expressed concern that I may not fair well in Upstate New York due to the harsh winters. They obviously aren’t aware of my two winters spent in the Grand Teton National Park, Wyoming. I worked at a lodge which only opens during the summer months and has a skeleton staff during the winter; much like “The Shining”, but thankfully minus the Jack Nicholson character. Lots of snow and cold. One winter we had two days of -42 degrees. Really, NEGATIVE forty two degrees.

In the photo below, I’m standing in front of my house and any white you see in the photo is snow!

We always used to say Jackson Hole had two seasons: Winter and August. One summer, it snowed on the 4th of July! The photo below was taken in May and we were thrilled to see the blacktop of the road. We drove on snowpacked roads the entire winter. It was an interesting place to live and I have great memories of fun people, lots of outdoor activities and, yes, enjoying the snow.

Can you tell by the puffy jacket and tight jeans that it was the mid-eighties?! I hear those jackets are coming back ~ can it be?

Dog Nut

Did anyone else catch the 60 Minutes segment on Sam Simon? Now there’s a man after my own heart. He’s more than a little nutty about dogs but he’s smart enough to know it’s a little over the edge even for him. He laughed at himself regarding his obvious love of dogs which is so refreshing to see.

I was very impressed with his foundation, The Sam Simon Foundation, whose primary focus is to train Hearing Dogs, saved from L.A. animal shelters. Once the dogs graduate, they are placed in homes to assist the deaf. Oddly, the foundation doesn’t take ANY donations! It’s completely funded by Sam Simon.

Dogs unable to complete the program are adopted out as companion animals. No fee is  charged for the adoption but an application and home visits are required. And, if that isn’t enough, he completely funds a mobile spay/neuter clinic for low-income families in Los Angeles.  He’s truly a guardian angel for dogs.

Where does he get all his money? He was one of the original creators of The Simpsons.

Wow ~ what a feel good story for dog lover like me!

Memories Returned

Two days BEFORE FM got his call regarding our move to NY, I got word that I was chosen for a Protocol job. Upon hearing about my new job, I went out and bought a new suit to wear on my first day. FG went with me so she could play Stacy from “What not to Wear.”

Yesterday, I returned the beautiful suit (jacket & pants), matching skirt and two shirts which I purchased for the job. Some people suggested I keep it since I’ll no doubt need it sometime in the near future, but it had too much “attached” to it and every time I wore it, I would think about yet another lost career opportunity.

Now that the suit has been returned, I can close the door on that and move on to our new adventure.

Vog Advisory

If it’s not the smog, it’s the vog 😦

Flashback Friday: Rome 2006

Our last ‘big’ trip we took before moving from Germany was a trip to Rome at the end of March 2006. We had 5 days to see thousands of years of history. It’s not called the “Eternal City” for nothing.

Our first stop after getting to the hotel and meeting up with our good friend, Heidi, was to go to Trevi Fountain.  It was so good to see Heidi and I was thrilled she’d be spending a few days touring around with us. I still think we would make a good “Amazing Race” team.

Heidi was the one who found the Bed and Breakfast we stayed at and the Daphne Inn was a great choice. The staff was excellent and it was in a fabulous location. I highly recommend it should you find yourself in Rome.

During our stay, we did our best to see as much of the city as we could. The best thing we did was opt for a ‘private’ tour of the Vatican. Basically, it got us into the Sistine Chapel prior to the hoards of tour buses arrived. It was pure joy to be in the Sistine Chapel with all but 10 people. I was so in awe that I have NO photos of our tour of the Vatican. Our tour guide, Luana, was such a wealth of information and it was all we could do to keep up with her. After the Sistine Chapel, we toured the Vatican Museum. I was completely overwhelmed.

After the morning tour of the Vatican, we toured Rome with a guide/driver named Ugo. I was very impressed with his ability to park in the tiniest of parking spots 😉 He took us to the Pantheon, the Colosseum, Tomb of the Unknown Soldier and the St. Peter in Chains church.

On our last day in Rome, FM ran the marathon. Since the roads around Rome were closed for the marathon, FG and I wandered the streets with very little traffic. This particular marathon allowed us to track FM’s run byt using runners at certain intervals. They had runners with balloons who were running a 3 hour marathon, 3 hours 15 minutes and so on. Since we knew FM runs about a 4 hour marathon, we waited for the person with the 4 hour balloons and, low and behold, FM was not far behind.

It was a wonderful way to end our travels around Europe. Now we know where we want to return to and Rome is definitely on the return list.

Sand Castles to Ice Castles

Our days of sand and sun are limited. FM was selected for a Battalion Command, and if you’re wondering where we’re moving, let me give you a hint: it’s a very cold there right now and it’s NOT Alaska. You got it ~ Ft. Drum in Upstate New York!  We’ll be moving in July and I’m already stressing about transporting the dogs. I think I have a “foster” home (thanks Dave) for them for a couple of months ~ I have to send them before the airlines impose the heat embargo for the summer and my friend, Dave, is an even bigger dog lover than me. Hard to believe, I know.

It’s a fabulous opportunity for FM but it’s taken me a full week to wrap my brain around the fact that I’m having to move again so soon and I’m very sad to be leaving this beautiful tropical location. I’ve become accustomed to wearing flip flops all the time and, I’m sure you’ve already gathered, I love being a beach bum!

If anyone has a great new name for my blog, let me know. Maybe I’ll make a contest out of it and have a prize for the winner.  😉

Farewell to a Special Friend

A close friend of FM’s passed away yesterday. Margie was FM’s sponsor when he attended The Citadel and they stayed in close touch for all these many years.

She lived a long and interesting life but it’s always sad to say goodbye.

Thankfully, FM was able to see her last year in May before we moved to Guam and they enjoyed a fun reunion.

You’ll be missed, Margie!

New cast

FG got her new and improved cast today ~ it’s great! Thankfully, she only needs a cast around her wrist and not above the elbow. What a difference that makes. She gets re-checked in a month. The service at the Orthopedic Department today was outstanding. We were seen on-time and received quick, competent service. When the doctor heard how she hurt her arm, he said his son has been begging for heelys.

Later, as FG was getting her cast, we heard the following exchange in the next room:

Doctor: You mean you let your son wear heelys WHILE he still had a cast on?

Little boy’s Dad: Um, yes, his mom wanted him to try them on and he was in the kitchen.

Doctor: I’m having a disconnect here ~ while he STILL has a cast on?

Little boy’s Dad: unintelligible muttering.

Too funny. These heelys are getting a bad reputation in the Orthopedic world.

Waiting to Inhale

There’s been a terrible haze over Guam the last few days. The first I noticed it was last Thursday when I kept cleaning my glasses thinking they were dirty. Then when it got thicker, I thought maybe it was the local trash dump on fire.

Turns out it’s pollution from China. And like the linked article states, China is one big conveyor belt of polluted air. The last two days in Guam have been awful ~ so bad that I cancelled my weekly golf outing because I can’t stand to be outside. It’s smelly and makes my nose itch. The air even tastes bad.

A lot of people pooh-pooh global warming BUT I see nothing wrong with trying to clean up large polluting cities so “innocent” countries don’t have to deal with the fall-out. I really didn’t expect the pollution of China, which is two thousand miles away, to affect me here in Guam and it’s been quite disturbing to contemplate how the actions of others has such a big impact on the rest of the world.

From what I’ve read, the Chinese government is making a sincere attempt to clean up their cities especially in Beijing, where the air pollution index is highest and where the Olympic will be held in 2008. For everyone’s sake, let’s hope they get it right.
