Farewell to a Special Friend

A close friend of FM’s passed away yesterday. Margie was FM’s sponsor when he attended The Citadel and they stayed in close touch for all these many years.

She lived a long and interesting life but it’s always sad to say goodbye.

Thankfully, FM was able to see her last year in May before we moved to Guam and they enjoyed a fun reunion.

You’ll be missed, Margie!

FM decided to join his Dad and get a “tat” of his own ~ FG was the artist and she drew a heart with “Patti” in the middle. I was shocked she even did that in fun ~ she despises tattoos.

My dad died on my birthday 20 years ago today. It would be 7 years until I felt like celebrating my birthday again and in 1993, a group of us ‘Hotlanta’ singles went out on the town. Because it was my birthday, I got to chose where we would go and it was a foregone conclusion that I would pick the County Cork Irish Pub. I always had fun there.

After a couple of ‘black & tans’, I was told I could “pick out” someone that we would all go over and talk to. I surveyed the pub and settled on a clean-cut, about our age guy who was sitting at the bar.  If I remember correctly, we sent Wendy over first since she was the ‘hottie’ of the group. Seriously, heads ALWAYS turned when she entered a room.  The rest of us joined the conversation and after a few minutes, I knew this guy was not for me. Seemed nice enough but not my type. 😉  As my friend, Stacy described it: my eyes glazed over and I totally lost interest in the conversation. BUT she was particularly smitten and they really hit it off. Stacy was a master at flirtation so he was done for.

Here’s where destiny comes in: Stacy began dating Scott which led me to playing racquetball with him which led to my being invited to his “football watching” party in October. Scott invited a buddy of his from Ft. Benning who turned out to be my future husband. Scott ended up being the best man at our wedding and Stacy my maid of honor. Unfortunately, they split up after our wedding but thankfully for me they hit it off at the pub so I had a chance to meet FM. ▼

On Sunday, we ate a delicious Father’s Day Brunch Buffet at the Outrigger Guam. There was such a varied selection of international cuisine; we had to pace ourselves. The buffet included sashimi, sushi, made to order pasta & omelets, carving stations, crepes, and about 15 different types of dessert. Yummy! Even though the place was packed and the staff a little stressed, they kept a smile on their faces and made us feel welcome.

After we were filled to capacity, we made our way to the Navy base and checked out Gab Gab Beach. Beautiful! A great spot for Logan to practice her snorkeling ~ it was calm waters and a nice variety of fish. We couldn’t get her out of the water so John and I took turns snorkeling with her.

We drove to Orote Point Lookout and this is the gorgeous view we encountered:

Happy Father’s Day!

Happy Father's Day to all the great Dads who make each and every day special for their children, and to those who are father figures to children who need them.

It has been 19 years since I spent a Father's Day with my Dad. I miss him everyday but even more so on days like this. I adored my Dad ~ he was smart, funny, adventurous, athletic and a great judge of character. Here is one of my favorite photos of him with my sister. They both loved golf and spent a lot of time on the course:

For many years I couldn't bear to celebrate the day at all but now that I have a daughter of my own, I share my memories with her and we make the day she spends with her Dad very special. FG has inherited her Grandpa's love of golf:

I praise all those fathers who have died but who live on in our hearts and memories ~ their love will continue to nurture us for all our lives.
